Customised Cakes We Made for 3 Well-Known People in Singapore (We Can't Say Who!)

Behind the Cakes
Every now and then, someone recognisable gets in touch with us about a birthday, an anniversary or what starts off as “just a small family celebration”.
It is rarely small.
The guest list can be long, expectations are understandably high, and when you are creating a one-off cake for an important occasion, you only get one chance to get it right.
We cannot tell you who these clients are. Confidentiality is part of making customised cakes in Singapore for customers who value their privacy.
But we can show you what we made, why we designed each cake the way we did, and what happened behind the scenes.
One of three memorable customised cake projects we can show you, even if we cannot tell you who ordered them.
What Makes Bob the Baker Boy’s Customised Cakes Different?
Bob the Baker Boy’s customised cakes are baked from scratch using real ingredients, made lower in sugar, and finished with Swiss meringue buttercream rather than covering the whole cake in fondant. Our team also considers practical details such as Singapore’s heat, venue conditions, delivery windows, serving size and how a design will hold up outside the studio.
What Goes Into a Customised Cake Before the Decorating Starts?
The decoration may be what everyone sees first, but a customised cake still has to taste good, stay moist and survive the actual celebration.
Baked From Scratch
Our cakes are baked fresh from ingredients rather than relying on ready-made sponge mix.
Lower in Sugar
Our cakes are formulated to be less sweet while still keeping the flavour and texture people expect from a celebration cake.
Swiss Meringue Buttercream
Instead of coating the entire cake in fondant, we use Swiss meringue buttercream made with pasteurised egg whites.
Real European Butter
Butter is a major part of both flavour and structure, so it is one of the ingredients where we do not take shortcuts.
Why We Do Not Recommend Whipped Cream for Outdoor Cakes
Singapore weather is not kind to delicate cakes.
Whipped cream softens quickly in heat, and coloured decorations can start to bleed. For outdoor parties or venues without reliable air-conditioning, we usually recommend buttercream because it gives the cake a better chance of arriving and staying looking the way it should.
That became especially important for the first cake in this story.
1. The Charizard Cake That Had to Survive a Non-Air-Conditioned Venue
This one still gives us mild anxiety when we think about it.
The birthday boy loved Pokémon, and Charizard was the favourite. The brief was to make Charizard look fierce enough to be exciting, but still cute enough for a child’s birthday.
We created a two-tier cake, with an 8-inch tier on top and a 10-inch tier underneath, designed to serve around 55 adults and 45 children.
The cake was made in our bestselling 55% Belgian chocolate flavour, which is lower in sugar and nut-free.
The top tier featured Charizard, flames and the birthday boy’s name, while the lower tier took inspiration from a Poké Ball.
Alongside the cake were 25 chocolate cupcakes, each decorated with a different Pokémon character, including Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, Pikachu, Zapdos, Articuno, Moltres, Mew and Mewtwo.
Then we found out where the party was happening.
Wild Wild Wet. No air-conditioning. In Singapore.
For a large buttercream cake, that completely changes the delivery plan.
The family also could not wait more than around 30 minutes after our arrival, so the delivery team had a very narrow window. Timing had to be precise enough that the cake was not sitting around unnecessarily in the heat.
The finished two-tier cake at the celebration, with Charizard on top and a Poké Ball-inspired lower tier.
The cake held its structure through the celebration while staying soft and moist inside.
That is one of the things people sometimes miss when judging a customised cake. The real test is not how perfect it looks in the bakery.
It is how it performs at the actual party.
Planning an Outdoor Birthday Party?
Tell us about the venue when enquiring. Air-conditioning, outdoor exposure, setup time and delivery windows can all affect the cake design and finishing we recommend.
Enquire About a Custom Cake2. The Money-Pulling Huat Cake With $800 Inside
This cake was much smaller, but the surprise inside made it one of our favourites.
The 6-inch Huat cake was designed for a cosy family celebration of nine people, again using our Belgian chocolate flavour.
The family originally liked the idea of a classic mahjong-inspired pulling cake.
There was just one problem.
Mum did not play mahjong.
So instead, they made it about TOTO.
The finished Huat cake was decorated with TOTO-inspired numbers, gold details and a hidden money-pulling surprise.
The family put $800 in $50 notes inside the money-pulling mechanism for Mum to “win”.
Dad kept asking us how we managed to hide the money without destroying the sponge.
We are keeping that part to ourselves.
How Does a Money-Pulling Cake Work?
When it was time for the surprise, we gave one important instruction:
As the topper was lifted, the hidden $50 notes emerged from the cake one after another.
Mum’s reaction when the notes started coming out was the whole reason the cake worked.
Because sometimes the most memorable customised cakes are not necessarily the biggest or most complicated.
They create a moment everyone in the room wants to watch.
Can You Put Money Inside a Birthday Cake?
A money-pulling cake uses a purpose-built mechanism that allows notes to be pulled from the cake as part of the celebration. The surprise can be personalised around the recipient, as this TOTO-themed Huat cake was for a family birthday.
3. The Chess Cake That Changed Direction Halfway
Not every custom cake goes exactly according to the first sketch.
And that is completely normal.
The birthday boy was really into chess, so our design team initially came up with something much more elaborate than a standard chessboard.
The original idea was a 3D sea-creature chess cake.
Team white would sit in a warm, light-coloured reef. Team black would sit in a cooler, darker reef, with underwater elements surrounding the board.
Original Concept
A Chessboard Under the Sea
The first design combined a playable-looking chessboard with coral, sea creatures and contrasting light and dark underwater teams.
It was an ambitious concept.
But the birthday boy already had a much clearer idea in mind. He wanted a classic, original chess-themed cake without the sea creatures.
So we changed direction.
Custom Cake Design Sometimes Means Letting Go of the First Idea
Our job is not to convince someone that our first concept is better than theirs.
It is to understand what they actually want and turn that into a cake that works.
The finished design became an 8-inch by 8-inch square chess cake in our Signature Belgian chocolate flavour.
It was slightly upsized so the proportions and chessboard would photograph better, even though the celebration itself was only for a family of eight.
The final direction was much cleaner and closer to the birthday boy’s original vision.
What These Three Custom Cakes Had in Common
A Charizard cake for around 100 guests, a six-inch money-pulling cake for nine people and a square chess cake for a family of eight sound like completely different projects.
They were.
But the process behind them had a few things in common.
The Celebration Comes First
The venue, guest count, recipient and occasion all influence what kind of cake makes sense.
Design Has to Be Practical
A beautiful concept still needs to survive delivery, setup and Singapore’s weather.
Personal Details Matter
Charizard, TOTO and chess worked because each idea was connected to the person being celebrated.
The First Idea Is Not Always the Final One
Good customisation includes enough flexibility to refine or completely change direction when needed.

Start with the information that matters most: who the cake is for, what they love, how many people you are serving and where the celebration will be held.
If you have reference images, sketches, favourite colours or a very specific idea, send them along too.
If you do not know exactly what you want yet, that is fine. A good customised cake brief can start with something as simple as “Pokémon, but cute”, “Mum likes TOTO” or “he loves chess”.

Frequently Asked Questions About Customised Cakes in Singapore
What is the best cake flavour for a large customised cake in Singapore?
Our 55% Belgian chocolate is one of our bestselling flavours for larger customised and multi-tier cakes. It is lower in sugar, nut-free and popular with both children and adults.
Can customised cakes survive outdoor events in Singapore’s heat?
They can, but the cake structure, finishing and delivery timing matter. We usually recommend Swiss meringue buttercream instead of whipped cream for hot or non-air-conditioned venues because whipped cream softens quickly and coloured decorations can bleed.
Is Bob the Baker Boy’s buttercream safe for pregnant guests?
Our Swiss meringue buttercream is made with pasteurised egg whites.
Can I order a money-pulling birthday cake?
Yes. Money-pulling cakes can be customised around the recipient and occasion. The Huat cake featured in this article used a TOTO theme and concealed $800 in $50 notes for the birthday surprise.
Can I change my customised cake design after seeing the first concept?
Design changes can be discussed during the customisation process. The chess cake in this article moved from an elaborate underwater concept to a classic chessboard design after the birthday boy shared his preferred direction.
Can you make a cake based on someone’s hobby or favourite character?
Yes. Personal interests are one of the most useful starting points for a customised cake. Previous designs have been inspired by games, hobbies, sports, professions, favourite foods and character themes.
How big should a customised birthday cake be?
Cake size should be based primarily on the number of guests and the design requirements. Some designs may need to be slightly larger to give the decorator enough space or to achieve the right proportions.
How do I enquire about a customised cake from Bob the Baker Boy?
Submit a custom cake request with your celebration date, number of guests, preferred flavour, design ideas and any reference images. The team can advise on suitable options based on your brief.
